Overview: Italy’s SDI System & Mandates
Italy pioneered Europe’s modern e-invoicing regime. Via the Sistema di Interscambio (SDI), managed by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency), it has made electronic invoicing mandatory for B2G (Business-to-Government), B2B (Business-to-Business), and B2C (Business-to-Consumer) transactions. All invoices must be submitted through SDI in the FatturaPA XML format, consistent with the European standard EN 16931.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BELGIUM REGULATION
The SDI is Italy’s official government platform for electronic invoicing. It acts as an intermediary between businesses and the Italian Tax Authority, ensuring all invoices are correctly formatted, validated, and reported.
Since 2019, all B2B, B2C, and B2G transactions in Italy are required to use e-invoicing through the SDI platform, with very few exemptions (such as specific micro-enterprises or foreign entities).
Invoices must be submitted in the FatturaPA XML format, following the technical specifications provided by the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate).
Italy is expected to align further with EU e-reporting and VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) initiatives, expanding data-sharing and reporting requirements. Eaglessoft continuously updates its platform to remain fully compliant.
Eaglessoft automates the entire process — from generating FatturaPA-compliant invoices to transmitting them through SDI and receiving validation responses in real time.
